The advice to drink eight glasses of water daily is widely repeated—but it’s not scientifically precise.
Hydration needs depend on body size, climate, activity level, medications, and diet. Older adults, in particular, may experience a reduced thirst response, making it important to hydrate intentionally—but not rigidly.
Water also comes from food. Fruits, vegetables, soups, and even coffee and tea contribute to daily fluid intake. For many people, monitoring urine color (pale yellow) is a more practical hydration guide than counting glasses.
Bottom line: Listen to your body, hydrate consistently, and adjust intake based on lifestyle rather than fixed numbers.
